Wing Matthew Owen is latest SRFC recruit

By Hannah Willis | 07/08/2018

  •   21-year-old wing, Matthew Owen, sets his sights on the Whites jersey
  •  Former Wales 7s International and Scarlets Academy player
  • Richard Lancaster, “He’s hard to miss being such a big man on the wing, but we are sure he’ll be catching the eye of supporters for other reasons this season.”

Born in Anglesey but raised in London, Matthew initially played rugby league for the London Bronco’s before moving to Wales aged 17 where he was picked up by the Scarlets for the Under 18 age grade set up.

The opportunity of inclusion within the Scarlets Academy followed, along with selection in the Wales 7s squad playing on the World Rugby 7s circuit in 2016 with the likes of Sam Cross, Lloyd Evans and Tom Williams.

Towering in at 6ft 4, Matthew moves to St Helen’s following a season at Carmarthen Quins, and is seeing his next rugby opportunity as a new personal challenge – “I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunities to be involved with both the Scarlets regional set up, and Wales International 7s camps, but I’m now looking forward to building a name for myself within a club setting in the Premiership. There’s few clubs with a history like Swansea’s, so there was no better time than now to build on my 15s game with a club like The Whites, especially in such crucial season.”

Director of Rugby, Richard Lancaster added, “Math is a really exciting prospect that’s played to a high level in both sevens and rugby league, and also has regional exposure with the Scarlets. He’s hard to miss being such a big man on the wing, but we are sure he’ll be catching the eye of supporters for other reasons this season. He’s still only 21, so no doubt he has a big future ahead of him.”

For a big season, we need big crowds, so don’t forget to make the most of the early bid offer on this years season tickets and apply by this Friday! For as little as £90, you can attend every men’s and women’s home game, receive 10% off at the bar and be eligible for concessionary prices on Sunday Lunches! Pre season fixtures kick off THIS Saturday at Broadacre, when we’ll take part in a mini tournament with Dunvant RFC and Mumbles RFC. Three thirty-minute games per team, first match kicks off at 1:45pm! We’ve also added an additional preseason fixture which will take place on Thursday August 23rd at Risca RFC vs Newport, kick off 7:30pm.
