  • Swansea grab consolation bonus point

By: Paul Hopkins

A horror first half condemned the Whites to defeat in a ten try thriller at Parc Y Scarlets.

The home side opened the scoring against the run of play when centre Ryan Davies intercepted a Matthew Aubrey pass to race 60 yards downfield to touch down under the posts. Fly half Billy McBryde converted.

A second try should have followed when full back Leon Randell split the Whites’ defence, but he threw a forward pass out wide to winger Matthew Jenkins.

Centre Rhys Williams made a break out wide for the visitors and lock Tudor Hughes powered past three tackles, but he spilled the ball forward a few metres short of the line.

Llanelli grabbed their second try in style when a home scrum turned almost 90 degrees before scrum half Gareth George spotted a gap in midfield to send Jenkins racing clear to score. McBryde converted.

It could have been a third try when deft handling out wide saw lock Tom Price chip through, but the chasing flanker Lloyd Pike was unable to gather the ball and the move broke down. Play was brought back for a Whites infringement and McBryde kicked to the corner.

Prop Rhys Thomas and centre Oli Reyland were both held up on the line, but offside by Aubrey gifted McBryde a simple three points from in front of the posts and earned the scrum half a yellow card.

Swansea hit back through full back Luke Griffiths after centre Jake Randall made a powerful run into the heart of the Llanelli defence. Full back Owen Howe converted.

Seconds later Hughes sprinted back at the home side from the restart and fed the supporting hooker Tom Ball for a try in the corner. Howe missed the conversion.

It was two minutes of madness as Ryan Davies shrugged off a tackle to score a third Llanelli try. McBryde missed the conversion.

A powerful scrum by the home pack forced the Swansea front row to stand up and McBryde kicked to the corner. From the lineout Llanelli stayed patient and got the ball out to McBryde who dived over to score a bonus point try. He also converted.

Swansea had a chance to mount an attack, but Howe’s attempt at a penalty touch finder sailed over the dead ball line.

An outstanding move involving backs and forwards resulted in a try for home captain Nathan Hart. McBryde converted.

The home side had one more chance to strike again before half time with a close range lineout and prop Tom Sloane was yellow carded for killing the ball. McBryde again kicked to touch and Swansea were reduced to 13 men when flanker Jon Vaughan was also penalised for deliberate offside.

From the resulting scrum a marching Llanelli pack saw Hart score his second try. McBryde converted.

A poor lineout throw by replacement hooker Elgan Lewis with his first action of the game gifted Swansea a scrum just a few metres from the Llanelli line, but the home pack won the ball against the head and were able to clear.

Prop Ben Leung was penalised for holding on after the tackle on halfway and Aubrey kicked to touch. An infringement at the lineout gave Swansea another penalty and Aubrey again chipped to the corner, but lock Matt Dodd lost the ball forward at the maul.

After a surprisingly scoreless opening 20 minutes to the second half fly half James Davies fed fly Aubrey, who used his pace to touch down in the corner. Aubrey converted.

The Swansea forwards drove into the Llanelli twenty-two and the home side were penalised for offside at the breakdown. Aubrey kicked to the corner, but the move broke down, although winger Ashley Evans was sent to the sin-bin for an off the ball challenge.

Swansea grabbed a bonus point of their own when Aubrey touched down in the corner from a close range scrum. He also converted.

Replacement winger Dan Howells looked set to score after picking up a long pass, but he was brought down by the last tackler on the twenty-two and the home side regrouped to force a relieving penalty.
